Transforming Our Bathroom: A Renovation Journey Years in the Making

Ever since we moved into our home in 2014, the bathroom has been a space we dreamed of updating. While functional, it was small, outdated, and not practical for a growing family. The layout, with its narrow width and oversized tub, felt cramped and inefficient. But there was one feature we absolutely wanted to retain: the window. It brought in the most beautiful natural light, which we knew would shine even brighter in a reimagined space.

Fast forward to today, we’re thrilled to share our modern, functional, and family-friendly bathroom renovation. And we couldn’t have done it without the incredible work of Matt Izzi from MDD Construction. Let’s dive into the details of this transformation, and we’ll link some of our favorite products in case you’re inspired to refresh your own space.

Updating the Layout for a Spacious Feel

One of the biggest changes we made was expanding the bathroom into the adjoining kitchen by about a foot. That extra space made a world of difference, giving us the opportunity to create a layout that feels open and inviting.

To make the most of the new square footage, we also reconfigured the plumbing and layout. The shower was relocated to the exterior wall, in the back of the bathroom, where it now frames the gorgeous window that lets natural light flood the space. This decision not only maximized functionality but also created a stunning focal point. The walk-in shower now feels luxurious and airy—far from the cramped space we had before.

A Perfectionist at Work: Matt Izzi of MDD Construction

We were lucky to have Matt Izzi from MDD Construction lead this project. Serving the Delaware County, PA area, Matt specializes in bathroom, kitchen, and basement renovations, and his craftsmanship is second to none. Matt is a true perfectionist who takes immense pride in his work, ensuring that every detail is executed flawlessly.

From the start, his communication was excellent. He kept us informed throughout every step of the renovation, providing updates and taking the time to walk us through each decision. Beyond his skill and professionalism, Matt also made the experience memorable by taking the time to chat with our four young kids, making them feel included and comfortable during the process.

We cannot recommend him highly enough if you’re considering a home renovation project.

Planning the Design: A Balance of Style and Function

To visually expand the space, we chose subway tiles with dark grout, which not only look timeless but are also easy to clean. The contrast between the white tiles and the hexagonal black floor tiles (a favorite design detail) creates a sleek, modern look. The new layout and design bring a sense of calm and sophistication, which is exactly what we wanted for this family-friendly space.

The Vanity: Where Style Meets Function

We upgraded our old vanity with the Nameeks Derin Modern Bathroom Vanity. The walnut finish adds warmth and texture to the space, balancing the modern black-and-white palette. The deep drawers provide ample storage for toiletries, towels, and other essentials, while the white ceramic sink’s minimalist design ties everything together.

The Moen Align 8-inch widespread faucet in matte black complements the vanity perfectly, adding a cohesive touch to the overall design.

A Luxurious Shower Experience

Replacing the bulky tub with a walk-in shower was a game-changer. The new shower, positioned on the exterior wall, frames the window beautifully, allowing natural light to flood the space. We installed the Moen Align M-Core 3-Series Shower Trim Kit in matte black, along with a matching hand shower. The sleek design not only looks incredible but also enhances functionality, making bath time for the little ones so much easier.

For added storage, we incorporated a built-in niche, which keeps our shampoos, body washes, and conditioners organized and within reach. How stylish do these black bottles look against the white tiles?

Finishing Touches That Shine

Attention to detail is what transforms a renovation into a space you truly love. We chose the following Moen Align accessories to complete the space:

Each piece seamlessly integrates into the design, adding functionality without compromising aesthetics.
